Auto-Biography
Nicholas Sinclair Schrage was born in the Quad-Cities (Moline, Illinois), moved to Pennsylvania, where he graduated High School. While growing up, Nicholas’ interests also included swimming and music. He participated as a percussionist at seventeen where he and over 100 other high school musicians toured countries in Europe and Scandinavia with American Music Abroad; including performances in countries such as Belgium, France, Holland, and Austria.
Nicholas entered the United States Navy at seventeen and brought his skills as a percussionist with him, becoming the ship’s drummer aboard his first ship. During his eleven-year career in the Navy his service included job duties as an Operations Specialist, eventually qualifying as an Air Intercept Controller, directing fighter and attack aircraft from aboard ship. He performed these duties stationed aboard the USS Mississippi (CGN-40) and the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). Nicholas received numerous commendations, awards and medals, including the Joint Services Achievement Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, two Navy Good Conduct Medals, certification as an Air Intercept Controller, as well his Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist decoration, which was personally awarded/pinned by Commander Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.
After being honorably discharged from the United States Navy at twenty-seven, Nicholas moved to Texas, interested in pursuing a career with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), continuing his discipline in aviation he had learned from his naval experience. A federal hiring freeze of Air Traffic Controllers disqualified him for entry into the FAA ATC program, so he pursued other interests.
Before and during his Navy career Nicholas discovered an interest in technology as well as his aptitude to describe how to do things, using his writing skills. Working in the computer field, first with hardware and eventually software, Nicholas worked as a Computer Technician, Business Analyst, Systems Engineer, Technical Illustrator, and Graphic Artist, honing his skills to become a Technical Writer. Lacking the resources to pursue a formal education, Nicholas is self-taught, learning from experience in the field and client sites, working as a computer consultant, most recently as contractor for industries, including Energy, Finance, Health Care, and Insurance, which he has been doing for over twenty five years.
Nicholas’ interests and talents are varied and diversified; he has the talent for conveying thoughts, descriptions, and illustrations as a word smith and with many years of non-fiction documentation to his credit, Nicholas is pursuing his private work for publication, endeavoring to become a published author sharing his fictional work. He lives with his fiancée, Teresa, and his lab Madyson, in the Southwest.
